You used to chuck the thermostat in a jug of boiling water to see if it opens.

Everyone who owns / operates a car needs to understand the basics of an internal combustion engine. With an understanding, one can at least speak the same "language" of a mechanic and be able to ask questions and test the facility that they've taken their vehicle to.We drive Toyotas and Subarus (northern Canada....October 24th with 125mm of snow on the ground and minus 12 degrees Celsius today) and I have a Haynes manual for each of them. I purchase parts online, but I don't cheap out (spend a little more for NGK as an example) and I have very few issues. A fraction of the money that would of gone to the stealership goes into tools.Learn to be as self sufficient and reliant as possible....it makes you smarter and stronger.....and again, if you can't do the work (or don't want to) at least learn the language. In today's day and age there's no excuse to at least try and research...most of us have the largest database the world has ever known in the palm of our hands. Thanks for your honesty Scotty.

why not replacing the head gasket instead of saying goodbye to the car?

One aspect of auto repair is having to supply your own tools...dealerships incuded (?). Diagnostic tools are not often part of the "wrench monkey" armory because of cost, in many instances. If the technician that was supposed to have repaired this ailing car didn't know about a cylinder head leak detector, then he probably draws a blank on the rest of the same category, so he certainly won't invest...and money can certainly be a problem. Do dealerships supply special diagnostic tools for the whole shop to share, or are they just SOL, and expected to turn out good repair work in spite of not having them? This guy shouldve KNOWN to change a thermostat, though. that was stupid of him. Specialty tools don't compensate for incompetence. That dealership sign doesn't make shoddy, expensive repairs better.

Sooo TRUE!! I just went through this exact same thing on a Honda SI. You could feel the heat just standing next to it. They wanted to replace the radiator. I held out and had the cooling system flushed, new serpentine belt and THERMOSTAT. Had to argue this with the "KID" service writer. I kept the original thermostat, and dropped it into a pan of boiling water..guess what...it barely opened, and would close again and open slowly...We did the cap also.....Old school right?? Keep up the good work.

There might’ve been a TSB on the hoses disintegrating cause fins on the rad to clog. Hard to imagine that coolant didn’t reek of exhaust tho considering how dirty it was. Yes any decent tech would know to check for oil/coolant/ exhaust mixing after overheating which is 101. Flat rate techs at dealerships get absolutely screwed most of the time especially on diagnostic time n the faster it gets done the more u get paid which leads ppl to shotgun jobs out the door. Not saying it’s right but that’s the game. The pressure on mechanics at dealers to produce is tremendous. The auto industry can be a slaughterhouse so it’s difficult for me to blame someone w little experience for making a booboo. The dealership needs to eat that bill however.

If they care more about their bottom line than they do about fixing the problem, this is what we get. No, I don't feel good when the owner of the shop comes down from his mezzanine saying, "Boy I sure had a good day."

There are not many people like you. I asked this mechanic if he flushes the radiator like you. Nope. They drain the old put the new in.

I have a '00 Ford Explorer with 211,00 miles. It was leaking coolant from the head gasket, slowly. I had my teenager driving it to school, and bought a few gallons of coolant and told him to keep it full. I bought some Bars Sealant to threaten it! My son told me, 3 months later, it was pouring out of the engine. I put the Bars in in it and it stopped the leak. That was a year ago. It is his senior year, hope it keeps running 'til college!
