Infinity: The Science of Endless

  • Published on: 16 January 2014
  • "The infinite! No other question has ever moved so profoundly the spirit of man," said David Hilbert, one of the most influential mathematicians of the 19th century. A subject extensively studied by philosophers, mathematicians, and more recently, physicists and cosmologists, infinity still stands as an enigma of the intellectual world. Thinkers clash over questions such as: Does infinity exist? Can it be found in the physical world? What types of infinity are there? Through an interdisciplinary discussion with some of the world's leading thinkers, this program will delve into the many facets of infinity and address some of the deepest questions and controversies that mention of the infinite continues to inspire.

This program is part of the Big Ideas Series, made possible with support from the John Templeton Foundation.

If there is something that is infinite; you will never know; because, you can never prove that there is not an end.

I had a near death experience in a baseball game at 14 years old. I remember getting hit in my eye socket by the baseball 80mph app. and there was just pitch black. Completely aware of absolutely everything that had transpired in my life at that point. I was instantly fearful of knowing im dead and this must be eternity. Just dark loneliness for an infinite amount of time was absolutely horrifying to say the least. All the sudden I could see a faint star in the distance. And at the speed of light it shot to me and was mere feet away at this point at it was the most bright, colorful, electrically vibrating and loving creature that exuded amounts of ecstasy that a human in the flash could never comprehend. He was covered in billions of what I can only describe as diamonds. As my father (God) picked me up like a baby and held me. He telepathically conveyed one main idea and it was at that instance. I was absolutely sure that his love for me was miles ahead of everything else in the universe. His love for me was so powerful that I almost could not take it. It was colorful beams of light and electricity that vibrated my entire being. Which confirmed to me why the Bible tells us he does not show himself to us in the flesh. Its too powerful of a love and it would kill us instantly. His love is an all consuming of what I can only describe as an electrical type fire that pulsates through everything. And again I found out later it was exactly as the Bible had describe. It is really frustrating to me that I cant describe to you how much God loves each and every one of us. Our language is extremely limiting in the aspect of description as far as his love for us and what he showed me. He gave me a mission before he left me and part of it was revealing to you what I witnessed and its important for you to understand that he cherishes the times when you stop in your day and just tell him how much you love him. Thats all he wants is your life and he is no different than a human when it comes to this. He created us to show and receive love and this is really overlooked a lot of times. Please if you are not taking time to talk to God. To really think about it and draw near to him because when you leave this world and he shows his love towards you physically. You will understand everything and why and regret every second you weren’t telling him how much you love and adore such an awesome God. I love all of you!!!!

You can grasp infinity like this. Take a number line with negative numbers at one end and positive numbers on the other end with zero at the center. You can go either direction and it just keeps going and going. It never ends because the is always one number of greater value to ad onto the last number written isn’t there. It’s infinity

Isn't attempting to talk about infinity... kind of like trying to actually describe invisibility?... you can define invisibility, but in order to describe it it has to be associated with something that was, at one point, visible like a refrigerator... but since there is currently no way to make a solid object invisible without destroying it, does invisibility actually exist? Therefore, if humans can't experience eternity... how can we define it or even mentally constrain it to something we can comprehend or quantify? Infinity is a human constructed concept of something incomprehensible... is infinity the same as timelessness?

... therefore you cannot "count" infinities or "it would take an infinite amount of time to count them". Hilbert's Hotel method is complete nonsense. And Cantor's example to show infinity by taking half of the remaining distance and then half of that distance is no proof or disprove either. Because you can neither prove nor disprove the existence of infinity. Why? Because it's infinite. So if you want happy customers, you don't move an infinite number of them into the next room to put the new one in room 1. That would would make an infinite number of hotel guests very angry. Imagine you do that every time a new guest arrives! And you can't put the new guest at the end of the list, because there is no end, remember? Ergo... Cantor circumvents this problem by creating a paradox: If you need room 1 empty, shifting the rest one room up is the same as putting the new guest in the (not existing) N+1 room. There is no N+1 room! The same paradox as 1/0 is "not defined you idiot". Well, i'm not the idiot here, my math teacher was. 1/0 equals infinity, but math teachers can't "operate" with infinity, even if they try like Cantor or Gödel. We could simply say: We are not allowed to know, so why bother.

1:03:00That's what I was talking about!!!The "uncertainty principle" in quantum mechanics can lead to infinites. Once we have the full set intervals in the universe, we can conclude a full observation and finally provide a GUT!

From reading lots of Hawking.... the biggest block in science that hits things (seems like Infinity) but is actually the "Uncertainty principle"Were going to see how correct he was with sooooooo much when the James Webb telescope is operational!I truly cant wait! When we finally are able to detect primordial black holes!

There are no infinities in finite nature, and that’s why measurements and mathematical equations can be applied to circumscribed boundaries of the finite universe

  • Curt Coller

Zeno's paradox was later "stolen" by Cantor, who is completely wrong and such led to a dismissal of infinity in general! Replaced by different "forms of infinity". Why? Just because we cannot imagine something does not mean it does not exist. If you watch quantum physics closely, you will notice we are getting slowly to the point, yet we don't understand why. God means infinity, but we don't see him, so we "pray" to him/her or whatever it is. But think of it that way: Infinity would mean everything must be infinite in the big picture, and that includes humans as well. There is no need to pray for an infinite life after death - it happens or it does not. We will never know. If it does not happen, not even the dead will know. If it does happen, they won't be able to tell us, I guess. The greatest conjecture ever made by mankind is God. It's made on insufficient evidence and - following our own rules of justice - we must therefore dismiss the case.

People don't understand infinity at all. Infinity doesn't exist. Let me give you an example. If you were told that there is a road you can drive on that never ends, most people would say it goes into infinity. That's the same thing as saying you could NEVER reach the end of this road. The road ITSELF doesn't have to be endlessly long. Now imagine that for every inch or mile you drove, that was added to the end of this road. You could NEVER reach the end of it. In effect you would believe it is infinitely long when it fact it was actually FINITE. It's just like the saying "moving the goal post". Infinity itself does not exist and most likely cannot. Another one would be numbers. There is no such thing as an infinitely large number. The act of adding 1 to it makes it into a different number and you are no longer talking about the same number,, but until you add that one to it , it actually is the largest number. All numbers are FINITE , and cannot be another number. By adding 1 to it, it creates a new number but it's identify cannot change. Therefore there is no such thing as an infinitely large number, because by saying this that number would have to represent all other numbers and that is not possible
